1. Who we are
MeetSpace is a Canadian dating platform operated from Vancouver, British Columbia. This policy applies to the MeetSpace website, mobile experience, emails, and any related services we provide (together, the "Service"). It applies whether you are an account holder, a waitlist applicant, a recipient of MeetSpace emails, or simply a visitor.
This policy is written to be consistent with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). Where the laws of another jurisdiction apply to you, we honour the additional rights they grant.
2. Information we collect
We collect the following categories of personal information:
Account information
- Email address and password (passwords are stored only as salted hashes — we never see your plaintext password);
- Authentication identifiers from third-party sign-in providers, if you use them (for example, your Google account email and ID);
- Account creation date, sign-in history (high level), and account status.
Profile information
- First name, age, gender identity, city, and relationship intentions;
- Bio, prompts, interests, and any other free-text fields you complete;
- Date preferences, dealbreakers, availability windows, and other matching information;
- Profile review status and any notes from our review team.
Photos
- Profile photos you upload, along with limited technical metadata about the image (file size, format).
Contact and safety information
- Trusted-contact details you choose to add (so we can support our safety features);
- Reports you submit about other members, and reports submitted about you;
- Messages exchanged between you and other members on the platform;
- Any information you provide when you contact us by email.
Technical and device information
- IP address, approximate location derived from IP, browser type and version, operating system, device type, screen size, and language;
- Log data such as pages viewed, actions taken, and timestamps;
- Cookies, local storage, and similar identifiers needed to keep you signed in and to remember your preferences.
Analytics information
- Aggregated, mostly anonymous usage metrics — for example, how many people viewed a page or completed a flow. We do not use third-party advertising cookies.
Policy acceptance records
- When you accept our Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, or Community Guidelines, we record your IP address and browser user-agent information alongside which policies you accepted, the version you acknowledged, and the time of acceptance.
3. How we use your information
We use your information to:
- Create, operate, and secure your account;
- Match you with compatible people and suggest places to meet;
- Send transactional emails — account confirmations, password resets, introductions, safety notices, and important service announcements;
- Provide customer support and respond to your enquiries;
- Review profiles to maintain community standards;
- Investigate reports, enforce our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines, and protect the safety of our members and the integrity of the platform;
- Detect, prevent, and respond to fraud, scams, abuse, and other harmful activity;
- Operate human review and AI-assisted systems that help review profiles, detect fraud and scams, identify policy violations, process reports, improve safety, support customer service, and protect the integrity of the Service;
- Maintain compliance records, record policy acceptance, and support legal and audit requirements;
- Understand how the Service is used and improve it over time;
- Comply with our legal obligations, respond to lawful requests from authorities, and enforce our legal rights.
If you opt in to marketing communications, we will also use your email to send occasional product updates and announcements. You can opt out at any time using the unsubscribe link in those emails.
3A. Human review and AI-assisted systems
MeetSpace may use a combination of human review and AI-assisted systems to help operate, moderate, and protect the platform. Automated systems may assist with fraud detection, scam detection, moderation, safety review, customer support, and other operational tasks. Human reviewers and AI-assisted systems may both be involved in a given decision, and MeetSpace may take action based on information generated through automated systems, human review, or a combination of both.
While we strive to identify and address policy violations, fraud, scams, harmful behaviour, and safety concerns, no moderation, review, or safety system is perfect. MeetSpace does not guarantee that all conduct, content, accounts, reports, policy violations, safety concerns, or prohibited activity will be detected, reviewed, prevented, or acted upon.
4. Legal bases for processing
Where applicable law requires a legal basis to process your personal information, we rely on one or more of the following: (a) performance of our contract with you (operating your account and providing the Service); (b) your consent (for example, for marketing emails); (c) our legitimate interests in running, securing, and improving MeetSpace, provided those interests are not overridden by your rights; and (d) compliance with our legal obligations.
5. How we store and protect your information
MeetSpace uses Supabase as our backend platform. Account information, profile data, messages, and uploaded photos are stored on Supabase's secure infrastructure. Where the underlying infrastructure stores data outside Canada, it is protected by contractual and technical safeguards consistent with industry standards.
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards — including encryption in transit, salted password hashing, scoped access controls, and row-level security policies — to protect your personal information. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security, and you use the Service knowing that.
6. Who we share your information with
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only as described below:
- Other members. Information you choose to put in your profile is visible to other MeetSpace members within the matching experience.
- Service providers. We share limited information with vendors who help us operate the Service — for example, Supabase (backend and database), Resend (email delivery), Cloudflare (hosting and edge delivery), and our analytics provider. These vendors are bound by contracts that require them to protect your information and use it only for the purposes we authorize.
- Safety partners. Where necessary to investigate serious safety incidents — including suspected illegal activity, threats of violence, or risks to a minor — we may share information with law enforcement, child protection authorities, or other appropriate organizations.
- Legal disclosures. We may disclose information when we believe in good faith that disclosure is required by law, by a valid court order, by a regulator, or to enforce our Terms or protect the rights, safety, or property of MeetSpace, our members, or the public.
- Corporate transactions. If MeetSpace is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to standard confidentiality protections.
7. Cookies and similar technologies
We use a small number of cookies and similar technologies to (a) keep you signed in, (b) remember your preferences, and (c) measure overall usage of the Service. We do not use third-party advertising cookies. Most browsers allow you to control cookies through their settings.
8. Data retention
We keep your personal information for as long as your account is active, and afterwards only for the period necessary to (a) fulfil the purposes for which it was collected, (b) comply with our legal and contractual obligations, (c) resolve disputes, and (d) enforce our agreements and protect the safety of our community. Reports, safety records, and information related to enforcement actions may be retained for an extended period to support the integrity of the Service.
9. Your rights and choices
Subject to applicable law, you have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you;
- Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete information;
- Request deletion of your personal information;
- Withdraw consent where we rely on consent to process your information;
- Object to or restrict certain processing;
- Receive a portable copy of certain information you have provided to us;
- Lodge a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, or with your local data protection authority.
You can exercise most of these rights from within your account settings, or by emailing us at hello@joinmeetspace.com. We may need to verify your identity before acting on certain requests.
10. Account and data deletion
You can close your account from your account settings at any time, or by emailing hello@joinmeetspace.com. When you do, we will delete or anonymize your personal information, except where we are required or permitted by law to retain it — for example, records related to safety reports, enforcement actions, fraud prevention, or legal claims.
11. International transfers
Some of our service providers operate outside Canada. Where personal information is transferred outside Canada, it remains subject to the laws of the jurisdictions where it is processed, and may be accessible to law enforcement and other authorities in those jurisdictions. We use vendors that maintain appropriate safeguards consistent with Canadian privacy law.
12. Children
MeetSpace is intended exclusively for adults aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a minor, we will delete it as quickly as is reasonable.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you within the app or by email, and where required by law we will ask you to re-acknowledge the updated policy. The version number and "last updated" date at the top of this page tell you which version is currently in effect.
14. Contact
Privacy questions, requests, or complaints can be sent to our privacy contact at hello@joinmeetspace.com. We aim to respond within 30 days.
